Morris "Namps" Smith, Sr.

December 11, 1942 — April 12, 2025

Windsor

Morris “Namps” Smith Sr., 82, of Windsor, VA, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 12, 2025. Born on December 11, 1942, in Lumberton, North Carolina, Namps was known to all as strong, kind, and full of joy. Though his given name was George Morris Smith Sr., everyone knew and loved him simply as Namps.

From a young age, Namps was a dedicated and hardworking man. He began his lifelong career at the Newport News Shipyard with NNI at the age of 18 and remained there until his retirement at 55. He was the kind of man who could build or fix anything, always approaching life with a “measure twice, cut once” mindset. His wisdom, laughter, and steady presence made him someone people naturally turned to for advice and support.

He was married to the love of his life, Sandra Jean Smith, for 64 years. The two met at a high school dance, and their love story endured through decades of life together. He is survived by his daughter Carissa Evans and her husband Jeff, granddaughter Presley Shields and her husband Cody, great-grandchildren Everest and Arrow, and grandson Scott Evans and his fiancée Sydney. He is also remembered by many others who felt like family—because Namps had a way of making everyone feel like they were his own.

Namps had a deep love for family, dogs, motorcycles, and music—especially Elvis and his favorite song, Seven Spanish Angels. He enjoyed riding his Harley, working on vehicles, and spending long summer days on the pier. He was always ready with a joke, a story, or a reason to gather the people he loved most. Dogs gravitated to him, and his laughter filled every room.

Though in recent years he faced health challenges following a stroke after a routine surgery, his strength and spirit never wavered. He remained surrounded by love and passed peacefully at home.

We take comfort in knowing that Namps has been reunited in Heaven with his beloved son Chip (his “Junior”), his mother who passed when he was just a boy, and his brothers. That long-awaited reunion brings peace to those who will miss him so deeply here on Earth.

A viewing and funeral service will be held at Little’s Funeral Home in Smithfield, VA on Friday, April 18. The viewing will begin at 3:00 p.m., followed by the service at 4:00 p.m. All who knew and loved Namps are welcome to attend and celebrate a life so well lived.
