Mary Angeline "Maryann" Hanson

Mary Angeline “Maryann” Hanson, 92 passed away peacefully in Smithfield, VA on September 12, 2023. She leaves behind the legacy of a kind and giving heart. She is preceded in death by her husband John Richard “Dick” and her beloved granddaughter Kory Laurene Forrest Jones. She is survived by her children Kip Redick (Sarah) and Kim Forrest (Mark); grandchildren Kymberly Carr (Paul), Caroline Redick and Caleb Redick (Danae); and great-grandchildren Quincy, Grady, Leaven and Kamryn. 

Maryann was born and grew up in Hood River, Oregon where she developed her passion for the outdoors, plants and animals in the shadow of her beloved Mt. Hood. She made Smithfield her home in 1977, purchasing a farm and raising animals. Maryann held many jobs throughout her life, including restaurateur, security officer and retiring as a supervising juvenile detention officer from the City of Newport News. After retiring, she and Dick travelled avidly, making friends all over the country. She was a Daughter of the American Revolution member and a member of Tidewater Hookers, a rug making hobby group. Her passion was creating beautiful braided and hooked wool rugs and gifting them to friends and family. Maryann has rugs spread from coast to coast, cherished tokens of love to keep her memory alive for those fortunate to have known and been loved by her.
