Lawrence Russell Goodwin

July 6, 1944 — December 15, 2024

Smithfield

Lawrence Russell Goodwin, affectionately known as Russ, 80, of Smithfield, Virginia, passed away on December 15, 2024. Born in Plymouth, Massachusetts on July 6, 1944, to Lawrence White Goodwin and Mary Frances Goodwin, he led a remarkable and fulfilling life.

Russ served his country with honor as a member of the U.S. Air Force for 27 years, receiving three meritorious service medals, and retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. Following his distinguished military career, he continued to contribute to national defense through his work at Lockheed Martin. His professional dedication was matched only by his devotion to his family and personal passions.

He is survived by his loving wife, Diane Goodwin; daughter, Kim Benzie (Mark); son, Keith Goodwin (Susan); step-daughters, Lindsey McKelvie (James), Elizabeth Hines (Tim), Katie Hatheway (Fenn) and Michelle Weupe (Asante); sisters, Laurie Hamilton and Ruth Aoki; brother, Edward Goodwin; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his lovable bernedoodle Sophie. Russ cherished his family above all and always made time to share his love of life with them.

Russ had many interests that kept him active and engaged. He found joy in sailing, venturing off on his motorcycle, and skiing. He was an active member of the Gatling Pointe Boaters Club, where he made many lifelong friends. He had a quick wit, a love for history, was an avid reader, and had a fondness for telling stories to anyone who would listen. Above all, Russ loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

A celebration of Russ’s life will be held on December 30, 2024, at 11:00 am at Little’s Funeral Home in Smithfield. Family and friends will gather to honor a life well-lived, with a reception to follow at the Gatling Pointe Yacht Club.  Russ will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, with full honors, in 2025.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the York County High School Sailing Team, P.O. Box 163, Seaford, Virginia 23696, in his name.
