James Penniman Murray, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away January 21, 2025 following a brief illness. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 27, 1960, he is the son of Omer Everett Murray and Nancy Penniman Murray (deceased). James is also survived by his sisters, Lynn Murray Caulberg and her husband, Steven Harold Caulberg (deceased), of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Joan Murray Thompson and her husband, Matthew Hill Thompson, of Lake Norman, North Carolina. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will miss his sharp intellect and wit.
James grew up in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and later graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He spent much of his career at Newport News Shipbuilding, where he was a dedicated and revered employee, known for his strong work ethic and passion for his craft. He lived in Smithfield, Virginia, where he made long, lasting friendships.
A man of strong faith, Jim had many passions outside of his professional life. He was an avid enthusiast of all history especially the Civil War period. He also enjoyed studying the bible, coin collecting and playing with his beloved cat Luna. Jim had great intellectual curiosity and deep knowledge in these areas which he shared with friends and family.
A private service will be held for his immediate family. Memorials in Jim’s name can be made to one of his favorite charities which includes the Bible Broadcasting Network, International Fellowship of Christian and Jews, or Pamplin Historical Park.
