James Milton Carroll, Jr, 83 of Smithfield, VA, passed away peacefully in the house where he was raised on the family farm. He was the son of the late James Milton Carroll, Sr and Lula Thelma Deans Carroll. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years Jessie Barham Bell Carroll. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jeannine Carroll; sons, James Brian Carroll (Heather) and Richard Bruce Carroll (Dawn); grandchildren, “Jamie” James Milton Carroll, III (Taylor), Leah Elizabeth Barham Carroll, Jessie Ann Barham Carroll, Brandon Butler and Kaitlyn Butler; his special cousin Patricia Smith (Bill); his childhood best friend William “Billy Joe” J. Holleman; and his close friend and golfing partner, Cliff Hall; a niece and three nephews; along with many other close family friends and neighbors from “the corner”. Jimmy was a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight. He graduated from Smithfield High School and joined the Army National Guard where he served for six years. After high school he worked at Smithfield Packing Company in the Sausage Room until he returned to the family farm to work. He retired from farming after Jessie’s death in 2002. He loved the water and spent many hours on his various boats named the “Bri Bru”, fishing, traveling and weekends on the docks at Smithfield Station. It was there he met his wife Jeannine and they spent the next twenty plus years together. During his retirement, he enjoyed his days riding around the farm and especially watching Jamie work the fields. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends in the South of the James golf group on Thursdays. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, 3 pm at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield with burial to follow in Mill Swamp Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the farm, 8461 Stallings Creek Dr Smithfield, VA 23430, on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 6 p.m .
