Helen Maude Saunders

Helen Maude Saunders, 91, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. She was the daughter of the late William Stuart Rakes and Cessie Teague Rakes.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Firth (Roger) and Charlotte Reece (David); her son in law, Chuck Colby; and a daughter in law, Patricia Brown; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Randall Saunders, Jr; a daughter Shirley Colby; and a son Charles Gerald Brown.

She enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren and loved walking her dog, Ginger. Mrs. Saunders was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary. 

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, 11 a.m. at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield. A private graveside service will be held at the Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations to the American Heart Association, www.heart.org.
