Helen Mae Bell Minton, a beloved figure in her community, was born on January 25, 1933, in Surry, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late William Perry Bell and Lottie Jane Bell. Helen was the widow of James Allen Minton. She peacefully passed away on March 10, 2025, in Smithfield, Virginia, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy defined by her kindness, creativity, and culinary skills.
Helen was known for her engaging personality. She took great pleasure in doing word search puzzles, which reflected her curious and sharp mind. Her passion for gardening was evident to all who knew her, as she nurtured vibrant plants that brought life to her surroundings. A talented cook, she was particularly renowned for her lacy cornbread, a dish that became a treasured favorite among family and friends alike.
Beyond her personal interests, Helen was dedicated to community service. She enjoyed lending her culinary talents to the kitchen staff of Smithfield Baptist Church and to the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, where she helped prepare for various functions. Her selfless contributions left an indelible mark on those around her, highlighting her generous spirit and commitment to bringing people together through food and fellowship.
Helen is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Elaine C. Abicht and Jim; her son and daughter-in-law, James Allen Minton, Jr. and Teresa; and her grandson, James Allen Minton, III. Each of them carries forward Helen’s legacy of love, compassion, and creativity, ensuring that her memory lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Helen Mae Bell Minton touched many lives with her warmth, hospitality, and the joy she found in life's simple pleasures. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to share in her journey.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 13, 20205, at 4:00 PM at Mill Swamp Cemetery, 6329 Mill Swamp Road, Smithfield, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad , PO Box 97, Smithfield, VA 23431, or the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, 1804 South Church St., Smithfield VA.
