Anthony “Tony” A. Reyes, 71, went to be with his heavenly Father on the morning of Wednesday, August 10, 2022. After a deteriorating battle with dementia, he passed peacefully, surrounded by family. Tony was born at home December 7, 1950 in Newark, NJ to Ismael and Pauline Reyes, the youngest of their three children. His older sister Lydiette was five and still remembers his first cry. At the age of two, he moved with his family to Puerto Rico where he lived until early adulthood. He moved to New York City for work where he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War guarding military aircraft. He left military service in 1976 and went to Panama to work with his dad before returning to the States.
Tony married Debra “Debbie” Berger in May 1981 at Longmeadow Church of the Brethren in Hagerstown, MD. They have two children, Talia and Alex, and four grandchildren, Remington “Remy”, Euan, Zoey and Dawson. Grandper would light up in the presence of his grandchildren. He was employed at CertainTeed Corporation in Williamsport for over thirty years and retired in 2016. He moved with Debbie to Staunton, VA for four years before building a house in Smithfield to be close to Alex and his family due to health concerns.
Tony’s zest for life was evident in his diverse taste in music, love for trying new food, motorcycles and his devotion to his family. He is survived by daughter, Talia Clusman of Appomattox, son Alex Reyes of Smithfield, sisters Lydiette Olano of Viera, FL, Miriam Reyes of Miami, FL, Marina Reyes of Orlando, FL and Angie Reyes of Vidal of Cabo Rojo, PR and nine nieces and nephews, many of whom have children of their own. He is survived by eight aunts and uncles and was preceded in death by his parents, and his Aunt Aida and Uncle Joe.
A celebration of his life and military honors will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Smithfield, Virginia on August 29 at 11am. Reception and fellowship to follow. His final resting place will be at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association, Disabled American Veterans or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
